Patty is a hairdresser, I met through networking. Patty’s business needed new customers coming in, so we sat down and discussed the issues. We decided that what people needed was to see what Patty could do, so we designed a website.

The Task
Patty’s business needed new customers coming in, so we sat down and discussed the issues. She had regular customers coming in, but no one new. The experience of choosing a hairdresser and realized for most it is daunting. Putting your trust in someone new was the issue, because they didn’t know what she could do. The customer needed to be able to see how talented she was. Patty’s business needed a platform where she could exhibit her work.
Behind the scenes
Initially I brainstormed. This allowed me to fully understand the issues and create solutions. Understanding why people were nervous to go to a new hairdresser was the key. Survey analysis showed that if people were not able to see images of the hairdressers work they’d be crossed of the list.
User centered thinking is about understand the users core needs and pain points. I created a user persona to understand all sides of the problem. This enabled me to walk through different scenarios in the users shoes, refining the solution as I went.
After refining down to what was required on the website I started planning. Patty desired a simple and clean website to attract her customers. Wireframing the website allows for thought and consideration around image and text placement, to create the best user experience possible.
Wireframing was an important part to this project as it was all about showing Patty’s talent as a hairdresser. This meant lots of images and little text, however this has the potential to become crowded. I avoided this by wireframing each step from paper to LoFi to HiFi.
User testing the HiFi prototype was crucial, as suspected there were specific areas that needed refining, from image placement to user flow. The user needed to have the best and easiest experience possible.
